Your guide to Mt. Teide in Tenerife. Insider information from people who live there.
Mt Teide is an impressive sight, which dominates the skyline over the North of the island. It is the third largest volcano on earth and at 12,188 ft (3,715m) is Spain's highest mountain.
There is a daily bus from Puerto de la Cruz, which takes you up the mountain with its winding roads and magnificent views. The landscape changes from lush green pine forests to a barren lunar type landscape, which was part of the location for the film Star Wars. The bus can drop you off at the cable cars, which in turn take you up to "El Pico Teide". However, the cable car does not take you to the summit. To climb the remaining 200mtrs you will need a permit. This is free and can be obtained from the following address:
Office P. N. de Teide,
Calle Emillio Calzadilla 5
38002 Santa Cruz de Tenerife
On a clear day you can see breathtaking views of the island and indeed surrounding islands. The other bus stop is near the only hotel - the Parador and from here you can put your walking shoes on and explore this strange landscape. Do cover up well as the sun here is up to 60% stronger but ironically tends to be a lot cooler due to the altitude. Also make sure you stick to all paths as you can walk for miles without seeing a soul and unless you are on a guided tour, no one will know you are there.Tenerife maps
