Welcome to our Tenerife Newsletter.

The New Year is welcomed more or less the same way throughout the world, with celebration. Tenerife is no exception to this. Most towns have bands playing in the town square with people dancing to the music and drinking and eating. A difference does occur however at midnight, with each chime of the clock at midnight a grape is eaten. This is for goodluck for each month of the new year. This is no mean feat trying to eat 12 grapes in 12 strokes, it certainly takes some practice. The new year is then usually seen in with a fantastic fireworks display followed by drinking and dancing into the small hours. It is a great time to be had by young and old alike, we certainly enjoy it.

We have just enjoyed what we have come to see as our second Christmas Day, this takes place on the 6th January and is the celebration of the three kings. This is when the locals exchange gifts, as we do on Christmas Day. That is why we end up with two Christmas days-it's great! Christmas here is generally celebrated from Christmas Eve right up to the 6th of January with family and friends coming together for the celebrations.

The weather here has been great as usual and we have had plenty of visitors escaping the cold, wet UK winter. We have found some good deals for our families and friends and thought you too may want to escape to the sun. We have therefore sent you some information of some great offers.

Where To Stay In Tenerife

A question that always seems to come up when people are looking at organizing a holiday to Tenerife is Where do I stay?
There is no hard and fast rule, to this question it all depends on what you are looking for in a holiday.

Do you want to relax in the sun and take it easy, but want to be sure of good sunny weather?
Do you want to party till you drop?
Do you want to experience a bit of Canarian culture and mix with the locals?
Do you want to stay in luxury accommodation, or are you looking for a bargain break?

Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos - Guaranteed Sun and Relaxation
If you're looking to relax on a sun lounger for two weeks you won't go too far wrong with these two resorts in the south of Tenerife. Both resorts offer very high standards of accommodation and activities. The resorts are mostly aimed at couples and families and are a bit more laid back in terms of their nightlife. The beach at Los Cristianos is excellent and is made from golden sand from the Sahara, rather than the black sandy beaches you tend to get on Tenerife. The weather in these resorts is excellent and you are pretty much guaranteed sun all year round - even in December.

Playa de las Americas - Party till you drop
Playa de las Americas has a worldwide reputation for fun and partying. If you're going with a bunch of friends for a two week blast, this is the place to be. Although you can find family bars in Las Americas, you're more likely to find bars and clubs aimed at the 18-30 age group, especially around the area known as Veronicas. Veronicas is a collection of bars, pubs and clubs that has suffered from a seedy reputation due to a number of drunken and violent incidents over the years. However, the authorities in recent times have managed to get the area under control and you can now find some very nice high quality bars and clubs that wouldn't be seen out of place in any other cosmopolitan European city.

Puerto de la Cruz and the North of Tenerife - Scenery & Culture
If you're looking for the real Tenerife, you're more likely to find it in the north. Although cloudier and slightly cooler than the south of Tenerife, the region is very fertile and green, which is a stark contrast to the barreness of the desert in the south. Here you will find authentic Canarian culture, with many festivals during the year and restaurants that serve up local specialities. Garachico, La Orotava and many other towns in the north have managed to retain their original buildings and customs. This is a place to visit if your looking for a bit more substance from your holiday than just a cocktail and a sun lounger.

Cheap Hotels in Tenerife
If you're looking for cheap accommodation in Tenerife you're in luck. Cheap accommodation in Tenerife is still of a very high standard so even if you're hotel costs you next to nothing, it doesn't mean it will be bad. All hotels in Tenerife have to maintain a certain high standard, so you can rest easy knowing that whatever hotel you pick will be decent. We've managed to find a number of bargain hotels for our family and friends here. They have 3 star hotel rooms from £17.60 per night, which is a bargain. Pair this up with a cheap Ryanair flight to Tenerife and you've got the makings of a very inexpensive holiday.

Luxury Hotels in Tenerife
If you're looking at staying in luxury while on holiday in Tenerife, then you have a couple of choices. The south of Tenerife has been investing heavily in building high quality resorts. One of the best in a lot of people's opinion is the Costa Adeje Gran Hotel. The hotel has been described as "A magnificent building with a glass façade, occupying a prime location, with superb panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and mountains. The Costa Adeje Gran Hotel boasts an extensive tropical garden area with three swimming pools as well as a roof top pool."

If you are looking for luxury in the South of Tenerife, you won't go far wrong with this hotel.
If you want to be treated like royalty in Northern Tenerife, check out the Botanico Hotel. The place is so good that apparently even the King of Spain has stayed there. Here's a description from the web site:- "The Hotel Botánico is a bright, elegant and spacious hotel and is perfectly situated for those looking for a peaceful break. Guestrooms feature a host of special touches, from marble bathrooms to private furnished balconies and all rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, wireless Internet access and satellite TV. This hotel is world class, so go treat yourself!

SANTA CRUZ CARNIVAL

An almost unbelievable decision was made yesterday by a judge of the Upper Court of Justice of Canaries in Tenerife. The judge awarded an injunction banning the celebrations of the Carnival in the centre of Santa Cruz and the surrounding streets.

This annual Carnival takes place throughout the island of Tenerife with the main celebrations focusing in the capital of Santa Cruz and in the town of Puerto de la Cruz and have taken place for the last two hundred years. The court has halted the celebrations in the capital of Santa Cruz on the grounds that it is deemed too noisy. This was in response to seven communities of neighbours and nine individuals complaining that the festivities violated their human rights.

The banning of this event brought dozens of people onto the streets yesterday to protest at the decision. The Santa Cruz mayor Miguel Zerolo slammed the residents for 'halting a fiesta that not even Franco managed to stop' and said he would do all in his power to reach an amicable solution to the conflict.

The residents that enjoy the Carnival in other towns in Tenerife are now concerned that it could be banned for them too. Could the same complaints have the same effect in other towns?, if so this two hundred year tradition that is enjoyed by thousands of locals and tourists alike could eventually die out.

CARNIVAL TIME:
Tenerife is home to an amazing Carnival that only just sits in the shadow of Rio de Janerio's carnival. The carnival takes place for a month starting in February and is celebrated all over the island. The biggest celebrations are held in the north of the island in the capital of Santa Cruz where all the bands and dancing takes place just near the port. Streets in all the towns come alive with colour and music.

Everyone gets excited for the street parades and arrive early to see the procession through the streets. The roads are blocked off and you can see the hardcore locals that have arrived really early to get a good view spot. They will have set up chairs for all the family at the side of the road and have snacks and drinks at the ready. Once you are settled in your spot and the carnival parade begins be sure to have your camera at the ready.

You are treated to a wonderful site, many people in the parade are in fancy dress and are just dancing along to the music. Then you have the dance and band groups that have been practicing all year for this event and have routines and wonderful costumes. Some of the dancing groups have very elaborate costumes that they have been making all year. There are also floats that have people dancing on them whilst wearing wonderful costumes and then arrives the Carnival Queens float, with that years selected Queen beautifully dressed in an elaborate costume waving to the crowds.

TFS Tenerife Reina Sofia Airport

Aeropuerto or TFS Airport Reina Sofia, is the busiest airport in Tenerife and the 7th busiest in the whole of Spain. It is located in the South of Tenerife in close proximity to the major resorts of Playa Las Americas and Los Cristianos. It is well connected to the rest of the island as it is close to two main highways the TF1 and TF5.

Although not a luxurious or particularly large airport it still boasts the following amenities - restaurants (Pizza Hut and Burger King, from memory...), bars, shops - gift and duty free, ATMs, a bank, post office, currency exchange facilities.

Getting to and from the airport is quite easy as the taxis are quite reasonably priced if you are travelling to the resorts in the south. If you are venturing to the resorts in the north of Tenerife you might want to get a local bus which takes around an hour and is very well priced and is air conditioned. Car rental companies at Tenerife Sur airport are represented by Hertz, Avis, Europcar and several others.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS:
Christmas is celebrated differently here to the UK. The Spanish have their main celebrations on the 6th January, 12 days after our Christmas day. They still celebrate the tradition of gift giving but this is done on the 6th January instead of the 25th December. This is called Los Reyes and instead of old Saint Nick in a sleigh driven by reindeer delivering the gifts it is three kings on camel back.

Most towns have a celebration on the eve of Los Reyes (5th January) where three kings will go through the streets on camel back and give gifts to the children. This can work out very well for you if you are over here for Christmas and the New Year as it means you can exchange gifts with family and friends on Christmas day, as is our tradition. You can then enjoy the Spanish tradition and exchange more gifts on the 6th January, two Christmas Days, it's great.

However you wish to celebrate Christmas if you are in Tenerife you can be sure of a warm welcome and sunny skies, that beats any gift in our book.

Playa de las Americas is one of the most popular destinations situated in the the south of the island. Due to its position the resort gets an enormous amount of sunshine, around 320 days a year and even in December its not uncommon for temperatures to reach in the 80's. The terrain is therefore very dry and mainly void of the lush greenery you can see in the north of the island but it does practically guarantee you good weather whenever you decide to visit, which makes it a great choice for a winter getaway destination.

The capital of Tenerife sits at the north of the island and is called Santa Cruz, which means Holy Cross. On entering the city you will become aware of its industrial landscape and huge port which has played host to the QE2 and more recently the QM2. Beyond the important industrial area you will find a vibrant, cosmopolitan city that offers great shopping, wonderful museums and beautiful parks. One of the best parks has to be the Parque Municipal García Sanabria, which was laid out in the 1920s and is full of exotic plants, trees, flowers and fountains. The city is also home to a great lido (Parque Marítimo) with numerous pools overlooking the sea. The lido is situated next to the impressive Auditorio, an architectural delight, reminiscent of a ship's sail and covered in millions white tiles which reflect in the abundant sunshine.
